I recently had a less-than-totally-satisfying vnc experience connecting
from my desktop to my bro-inlaw's <gasp> Windows Vista machine over a
relatively slow 1.5 Mbps dsl (which is all that was available to him).
client: vncviewer (vnc-4.1.2-20.fc7) via cable dn/up=5Mbps/360Kbps
server: tightvnc (latest) for windows approx dn/up=1.5Mbps/896Kbps

Did you use the DFMirage <http://www.demoforge.com/dfmirage.htm> driver
in the Windows machine? It makes a huge difference because instead of
sending screen grabs it just sends the drawing commands.
