The key formally known as printscreen, now is the print/sysreq key. so I was talking about magic 3-key combinations. There are some complications: - sysreq may also show as sysrq - doesn't work unless "sysreq" is enabled - doesn't show any feedback except to a virtual console such as ctrl-alt-F1 (etc). I think there is some kind of utility called maybe "system console" under X, but I can't remember where I've seen that. My practice on using 3-key combinations is to hold down 2 of the three (eg the alt and sysreq) and then deliberately tap _once_ the 3rd, then release the other 2. This way gives me confidence that I have not missed the simultaneity nor duplicated the signal. For this particular combo, it may in fact be necessary to depress the keys in exactly the sequence: alt(left), then sysreq, then other-key. By the way it is possible to harmlessly test via alt-sysreq-spacebar, which gives brief help. Details about sysreq are found at: /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-2.6.XX/Documentation/sysrq.txt for some value of XX. Be aware that actions available include some drastic ones!
