Also, elliptical wasn't as well understood (this may have changed).
People are rightly skeptical of encryption algorithms that haven't been
extensively attacked and analyzed.
If you look at the candidates for the EStream project competition:

A large number of the initial candidates have been broken. Some only
after a lot of analysis. And these are algorithms designed by
encryption experts.
