Also, elliptical wasn't as well understood (this may have changed). People are rightly skeptical of encryption algorithms that haven't been extensively attacked and analyzed.

A large number of the initial candidates have been broken. Some only after a lot of analysis. And these are algorithms designed by encryption experts.
