Windows isn't 100% safe from destroying your partition so the answer is no. Why don't you just install Ubuntu 8.04( latest ) and use the Wubi installation method? FYI: http://wubi-installer.org/ hint: it installs Linux into a large file on the Windows partition and adds itself to the boot menu. No repartitioning for those who have never done this before.
