Then I must have started on usenet shortly before then. I can't find any record on Google Groups, so perhaps I was just lurking. It's all a bit fuzzy. It would have been from a terminal logged in the UT Austin Physics Department VMS server using news (an awful program). A little later they had Linux boxes with trn.
