I've been noticing the same thing at my gmail address. A lot of times
recently, replies have been showing up in my Inbox before the
originals. I had thought that is was only certain messages and
couldn't see a particular pattern, so I didn't think to investigate
any further.

Thankfully, most people here trim/quote properly, so the reply
generally contains enough context to fill in the conversation. Gmail
then puts the original in its proper place in the thread once it's
received.
