Sounds like a greylist problem.
We might want to bump the retry time on sparky so that there is a retry
at 5 minutes.
When it comes to gmail, I tend to blame it first. Gmail used to hang
messages for 24-48 *hours*. This was such a problem that I had to tell
my students to not use gmail for class.
