I have eight Western Digital WD2500JD 250GB SATA disks that appear to be
password protected, at least according to WD's lifeguard diagnostic
tools. This hard disk password is new to me, but there's a decent
description of it toward the bottom of the page at
http://www.hddunlock.com
How to disable the password and use the drives? There are some free
programs on the Internet to do this. The process is to key in the old
password and it disables the password. Reportedly there are user and
master passwords. I don't have the user password and have tried a master
password from the Internet with no success. The master password I tried
is WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD (32 characters)
The program MHDD, from here,
http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2005.10.02-MHDD/
says the drives are in high security mode, which reportedly disables the
master password.
There is a pay-for service at the first link above, that claims to
unlock these drives in one minute. You first download a windows program
and run it. It tells you if it can do it, then you pay $20 per drive to
unlock them. I tried one drive and it said it could do it, but I stopped
short of paying the $$. I'm not opposed to paying, but wonder if there
is a CB way to do this.
If it only takes a minute to crack the password it can't be that strong,
or maybe it knows the master master password and it sleeps for a minute
so you think it's actually doing something.
How else to do this?
Karl Cunningham
P.S. This password business certainly puts a damper on getting used
drives at the swap meet, ebay, etc.
