I've been pretty good about doing backups but now I'm thinking I need to
do more than copy my files to another hard drive. Specifically, I would
like to store my drives and discs in a media storage safe similar to
this one: <http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/903732/Media-Small-Chest/>
Considering the threat of wildfires as well as the usual kinds I think
it would be a prudent action. Anyone have recommendations for these
things? I need to store two 3.5 inch hard drives and about 20 DVD's plus
a small amount of paper.
I'm sorry I can't be more help than this, but I saw a program not long
ago about such safes.
According to the program (in which they tested several "approved"
safes), most of them are not worth a fraction of their weight in sand.
The ones that are will have an approval rating (I can't remember what
they are) as well as temperatures they will withstand and the internal
temperature of the contents. For example, a safe might be rated to
withstand 2000 deg. while keeping the internal temperature at 300 deg.
for 4 hours. A good safe will not only have this clearly documented, but
will also have some sort of garantee.
There's probably some information on how to find a good safe on the
'net. I would have little faith in anything from Office Depot or any
such consumer store. From what I remember from the program, the safe
listed in the link you provided is not one that I would purchase to
protect my media. Even this one:

Can only handle 1850 deg. for two hours. A house fire can burn to over
2000 deg. for much longer.
