I agree that protecting user's data should be rule-1, and features such
as suspend should not require extra-normal expertise to use.

I guess this has happened just once -- and I don't suppose you are
volunteering to try forcing a repeat for the purpose of narrowing down
the failure causes, eh? ;-)

Still, it might be worth filing some kind of bug report.
