After fresh install of Kubuntu try:

-playing some mp3. FAIL. no mp3 support without online repository. License 
mumbo jumbo, I was told.
-play css encrypted dvd. FAIL. no medibuntu repos.
-play weird movie format. FAIL. no w32codecs. 

Could download a couple of those manually and dpkg-i them, but if I miss one 
single dependency...
