The resolution is not the only spec at play here. The refresh rate is an
important factor. Faster frame rates are great for CRT's but aren't
necessary for LCD's. As the frame rate goes up, so does the line
rate...and the pixel rate...the hardware used to capture and rescale the
image on flat screens just won't handle the higher rates. This has
caught a lot of the graphics and O.S. guys off guard. Later versions
(Knoppix included) are behaving better.
If you can choose the refresh rate, choose 60 Hz. (I know a lot of
install stuff is automatic now). Also, if you can, choose more than one
resolution. That way you can get your screen back by switching to a lower
res (in X, press Ctrl-Alt-+, the + being the one on the number pad).
Ultimately, you may need to edit the /etc/X11/XConfig4 file. Perhaps
someone has already done this and has notes...better than me making
something up.
