If you have the option to choose monitor type while running
"system-config-display" set it to "generic lcd".

Thanks Carl. Good call!
That fixed it. It was under "system settings"/"display". I selected the
hardware tab - the monitor type was still the crt. I changed to generic
LCD but also had to specify resolution in the hardware selection. I chose
generic LCD 1280x11024. However, you also have to change the resolution
under the settings tab. I left the color depth at thousands of colors -
don't know how much difference millions of colors would make
