You verify the checksum of the downloaded iso via

first download the README.checksums (or whatever it's called)

  md5sum -c README.checksums
or
  sha1sum -c README.checksums
depending on what kind of checksume they are.

It may complain about not finding other isos than the one you downloaded

You can also just do

 md5sum downloaded.iso
or
 sha1sum downloaded.iso

and check the output with the published checksum.

Now, after the burn, you may want to know whether the burning software
made any undetected bad-bits.

Carl has a script for testing burned iso against the source, or you can
use/modify my little program (attached). Mine doesn't give any progress
messages, but it does work for me. I do believe you can probably follow
the compilation instructions within ;-) ;-)

Yup, I haven't tried to do an update .. would be interested to hear
anybody else's experiences.

The past wisdom has been that it may not be a good idea to update a
RH-derived system across major releases, but I can't say from personal
experience whether that true these days, or not.
