But I would ask why you are anticipating a loss of OS and software
configuring. Linux does not do configuration stuff the way Windows
does, and generally adapts itself to what it finds at boot time.

It's dual boot with Win ME in one of the partitions. Just before it
stopped working, there was a high pitched steady tone coming form the
system speaker... before I discovered the CPU fan stopped working. I
thought later the tone may have been a warning about overheating the
CPU. Not knowing any better at the time, I disconnected the speaker lead
and kept running. The next time it would not boot. I would still need to
get it working no matter what OS so my plan is to first try another CPU.
