More investigation shows that my NEC ND-3550A CD/DVD reader/writer
seems to have lost the ability to _read_ anything. But it still
writes. I don't understand this. I thought that there was only one
read/write head.

I wonder if going back to Fedora 3 would magically cure it?

Try it under Knoppix or DSL or whatever...

If it can boot off a CDROM/DVD then it can read.

But as far as the actual drive is concerned, the laser is the illumination source with a detector in the same optical assembly. The detector helps guide the laser over the guide track and is part of a servo loop. However, the decoder circuitry downstream of the detector can fail causing an inability to read even though you can still burn.
