I kind of suspected this might be the case, after I typed the email. What I
really want to know is what chipset it is. From the command  line you can try
this (everything before  the $ is my prompt. The command is everything on that
line after the $)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lspci | grep Ethernet
03:01.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit
Ethernet (rev 02)

This is the result on my workstation. Yours may be different.
