I've never been able to run linux from a USB. I have no trouble
downloading a distro to a USB. I can open the USB and see that it is
there. When booting I can get the computer to load from the USB. But
nothing happens - absolutely nothing. Is this something that could be
done at an installfest?
Thanks,
Phil
The answer to your last question is, yes. I have seen the installfest
wizards get computers to boot from USB devices.
The interstitial explanation is that, like SCSI before it, there's always a
potential problem when attempting to boot from something other than the
built-in drive. First, the computer's BIOS must be able to recognize the
device, and then it must be willing to boot from it. Once the kernel has
been read in, it, too, must be equipped to deal with this device if it is
to successfully mount and run the system from it.
In your specific case, your statement that you "can get the computer to
load from the USB" contradicts your statement that "absolutely nothing
happens". Perhaps you mean that you can tell it to load from USB. But it
would most meaningful to tell us what you see, up until "nothing
happens". That'll tell us where the adventure begins.
