This all makes me wonder, what is the mechanism by which X allows a clipboard program to "register", and denies access to the rest? Maybe something as simple as a file in /var/temp or whatever. Maybe not a newbie question, really. I would hope that knowledge of this would lead you to identify "what's running", etc.
