Hi All, I'm trying to find some suitable devices for a project i'm working on. Basically I need some low cost linux devices with at least one rs-232/422/485 port and a cellular modem. In short, i'm reading some data from a serial port, processing the data and sending it to a server via the internet/cellular network. Its pretty basic stuff. Ideally I'm looking for hardware that is already integrated and packaged in some sort of enclosure and somewhere in the sub-$300 range.
The closest thing I've found is from Moxa, but its pretty costly (~$650) http://www.moxa.com/product/W315.htm It seems like there's a lot more of this sort of thing in Europe. I found these which are a bit closer to my ideal price, but they're in Poland and have no US distributors. Also, I'm not sure if the modems are FCC approved or if the cellular networks would even allow them. (~$350 + international shipping) http://www.gprs-controllers.com/npe-series-c-834_1933_107.html Another approach would be to couple a low cost PC with a cellular modem: http://www.wdlsystems.com/modperl/view_services.cgi?r=detail&prod_num=1EBOX23&aisle_id=1006 http://www.modemexpress.com/servlet/the-1529/Multitech-Modem-Wireless-GPRS/Detail This approach almost seems like a no-brainer as 1) its cheaper than either the Moxa or NPE, 2) more expansion options, and 3) its x86 based, so I wouldnt have to deal cross-compiling. there's also the whole Gumstix line, but the bare board isnt much cheaper than the enclosed eBox. I guess my question to you folks would be: are you aware of any other low cost embedded linux + GSM/GPRS + serial port devices that are approved to run on a US cellular network?
