I'm not suggesting that we try to change anything or rock the boat but I'm curious: By what means does Ed have us by the short and curlies that we brush off this sort of thing? I'm sure I've heard it explained a few times before but I guess I've forgotten. Is the above intended to sound the way it does or is Ed really just a nice guy who doesn't express himself well?

No, it is an ongoing issue. However, it is really an SDCS issue. Any discussion about this should really be directed at them.

The real issue is that Ed is friends with some functionary in SDCOE that controls the issuance of rooms. The grief of dealing with Ed and Co. isn't really large enough to warrant the effort to displace him.

Nobody wants to dig through this for a couple of reasons:

1) We have no good alternative lined up if we truly piss somebody off and get all our rooms yanked.

2) Nobody is willing to invest the time to create a better relationship with somebody equivalent or higher in the SDCOE chain.

3) SDCOE really doesn't want to deal with us at all, thank you very much. They don't get any money from us and yet have to invest some (fairly small) amount of time dealing with us.

4) There were bigger fish to fry for a while. The Mac User's Group caused a lot of grief in the way they grabbed SDCS leadership when Ed van Meter was President. They then caused even more grief when they pulled out of SDCS and unceremoniously dumped it in our laps (there were many other higher priority things we needed to resolve--like bank accounts and mailbox access). Most of that seems to be resolved at this point, so people may take another look at the meeting room issue (but I doubt it).

In addition, one of the other concerns is the meeting area itself. It is hard to find something as central as SDCOE. To top it off, we have *free parking*. That's not likely to be true even if we get a free room from one of the colleges.

That having been said, SDCS has more than enough money to *pay* for meeting rooms for quite a long time if they don't go overboard. However, there is no particularly good reason to do so.
