If the 'it' refers to the perceived good deal on a projector I posted a
couple of weeks ago, the sale price expired a couple-weeks ago minus 3 days.

There has been another deal come and gone in the meantime, I think.

The original question was whether it seems a good idea to spend
something in the range of $600 for a device that might be used a few
times a year when we are assigned meeting rooms where no projector is
present, and as backup in case the regular projector fails.

Of course, having a projector available might stimulate new uses that
bump up that few-times-a-year estimate.

Since the question has come up several times over the years, and since
KPLUG has the money, and since a projector seems to benefit KPLUG
members collectively, I'm inclined to answer my own question by saying
yes, even a small benefit probably justifies the expenditure.

I will keep my eyes open for future deals: My idea of minimum specs is
 1024x728
 2000 Lumens
 lamplife >~ 2000 hrs

==> contrast >~ ? (anybody know what is good here)

Beyond that, I don't know what to look for. Focal length?
Throw-distance? Projection size?

My greatest fear is getting something with poor optics, although I
suppose that would be relatively easy to discover and return if return
is feasible (eg at frys).

Neil's question suggests another good issue, to my thinking. The lamp
(expensive) in a projector is probably subject to shock damage, and the
risk is increased by frequent transport -- especially if subjected to
rough treatment. It seems prudent to look into providing shock
protection in case the original packaging is inconvenient for re-use.
Maybe a little thought could produce a "kit" with cables, adapters, and
what-not.

Regards,
..jim
