Hello,
Oshkosh is now finished for 2016.
I decided to do a tiny bit of research this year at Oshkosh because of the
upcoming date certain mandatory ADS-B/see and be seen thing coming. I attended
a Bendix/King seminar explaining it all plus I talked to a few vendors and
pilots like Rob, Mark, Larry.
Some things I found out are all of the cheap priced equipment/boxes are receive
only boxes. The Stratux unit that iFly was selling for $100.00 with their
740gps is a IN/Receive only and only reports the low level frequency aircraft.
That box does not receive the high level aircraft information. I was told that
the high level aircraft ADS-B boxes are only sending out the high level
frequency even as they are climbing or descending which of course means you
won't be able to see them with a single frequency ADS-B box like the Stratux.
The link below is for a box that was being sold for $250.00 at the show. It has
a built in cooling fan. It has the dual band reception capability. If you
bought a iFly 740 at the show, I believe they were selling it to you for $200.00
The main thing I learned about the receive and transmit boxes available now
that will meet the requirements for 2020 is they are not cheap. The system has
a lot of capabilities and a lot more capabilities being planned but not yet
implemented.
The best equipment available now costs about $10,000.00. The least capable
costs a little less than $2,000.00.
I will try to send a photo to this group that I took at the seminar. The chart
shows prices of available equipment and its capabilities. Red means no, green
means it has that capability in the chart. If I can't downsize it I will send
it to Mark and he will know what to do.
See ya
Larry H
