The spar cap grain should be at an angle of 45 degrees or more with the
wider surface ( the top/bottom surface), not because of strength
considerations but to minimize swelling and shrinkage due to change in
moisture content. Edge grained lumber has less change in dimension due to
moisture than does flat grained lumber.
