I had the aft deck sitting on it, and cowling installed. Canopy is sitting
where it's lived for the last few years, over on a table in the corner. I'm
not sure if he ever saw it. I removed the aft deck so he could see
everything, and then yanked the cowling off. Pulling aft deck and cowling
involves the grand effort of pulling out 6 hinge pins and five screws on the
top of the cowling, but I didn't have the screws installed. He didn't look
at my wiring much, but commented that it sure was nice to have that kind of
access. He said even the big boys would kill for that kind of access. It
does make a huge difference in quality of work when you can do whatever you
want back there. I guess I should post a picture of that area soon. He
looked at my wings, commented on my aileron and flap hinges, and liked my
split flap logic. He seemed happy enough with the appearance, but
placarding was the big deal. I've heard that the logic is that I know that
plane inside and out, but if I ever sell it to anybody, the buyer needs a
clue as to which switches do what.

As far as paperwork goes, I just called the FSDO and they sent me the
standard homebuilder's paperwork package and a set of instructions. I had
to look somewhere on the web for some REAL instructions, but it was really
only a few lines on a few forms. Not a big deal. After I had that in hand,
I called the DAR and he said "send it to me so I can get my ducks in a row",
so he showed up with everything done. The sum total of my paperwork
yesterday was to sign my name twice! Again, I really didn't call him and
tell him I was ready...he was coming up here to do two other inspections,
and added me to the list. I'd been telling him all day that I wasn't ready,
but he kept saying "we'll see what we've got".

He's an older guy who built his first Pitts in the 60's (and still flys it),
and now restores museum pieces at the museum in Birmingham. I told him I'd
fly down to see him soon...
