Back in November, right after I received my airworthiness certificate from
the FAA, I redid my dual Facet pump arrangement. Originally, I had a common
line between the left wing tank and the right wing tank. Both of my facets
were originally drawing off the common line. There were no installed check
valves to prevent recirculation of the fuel. All the testing I did proved
that fuel would not flow back through the Facet pump except for minute
seepage. Dan's testing also proved this. However, I did not like the fact
that I was drawing off both tanks simultaneously therefore, I decided to do
away with the common line and have one Facet pulling from the right wing
tank and one Facet pulling from the left wing tank. Both of the Facets pump
into a common Tee which feeds to a fuel shut off which then feeds to the
carburetor. The only thing which prevents me from pumping from one tank into
the other is the backflow prevention of the Facet not being used. I can run
the right tank pump independently of the left tank pump and manipulate my
fuel from which tank I wish to use. Since I have changed to this
arrangement, I have run both wing tanks from full to empty. In doing this,
absolutely no indication of filling one tank from the other was indicated by
my fuel gauges. What ever amount of fuel that was pumped back through the
pump not in use was so negligible that the gauges were unable to detect it.
I am completely satisfied with my fuel set up and am much more confident
operating the tanks independently of each other than drawing of a common
line like I was originally doing. Dan did some very nice documentation of
his test and what I personally have learned from my fuel set up only backs
what Dan has shown us all.
