We cut off the lip to make it easier to bend, and

I think Dan is talking about the "lip" or end by the canopy.  It has
a short "L" bend for stiffening.

As for splitting the top, a bit of fill and sand will take care of that but
just like in life, you take the road that appears to have the fewest
potholes.  :-)
