Mark,
A quick and simple collar is to cut a piece of black auto type 1/4"
black rubber fuel line the length you need and slit it lengthwise then
slip it over the mixture shaft. Easy on and easy off. I need to do the
same thing to mine.

 If I were real gung ho I'd make a stop collar that I could put around
the knob, and maybe I'll do that eventually, for now it's been three
weeks without a recurrence, so I think it's "solved".
