Ethanol raises the octane of fuel, but it brings with it the water 
absorbtion (there are two sides to that coin also) and higher volatility 
(think vapor lock), but it will raise octane for less than some of the 
"octane boosters" that you buy in a can (which are often alcohol anyway).
