I agree with Jeff.  I served as chapter president for several years 
some time back.  What I found most annoying about our meetings before 
my tenure was all the cross talk and the chapter trying to conduct 
business items at the membership meetings.  It got boring and people 
lost interest.  The first thing I got them to do was adopt a board of 
directors and conduct separate business meetings and then they just 
reported back at the membership meetings.  Then we found something 
for every meeting that made the members want to attend, i.e., 
speakers , demonstrations, videos, special guest, etc.  I then tried 
to bring more discipline to the meetings by using a P.A. system so 
everyone could hear and then eliminating all the cross talk by asking 
those doing it if they had something to share with the group.  It 
didn't take them long to catch on and pay attention.  I recall our 
attendance grew by 50% over the two years I served.  You can make a 
difference.  It just takes a bit of effort.
