Anyone wanting to get more info on VWs probably ought to joint the Air VW list on Yahoo and do some reading. I do remember that the VW Guru (Bob Hoover) had some very negative things to say about the prop hub to crank interface of the Aerovee engine design. Neither the Great Planes Force One or Revmaster engines have this issue. Also, you can convert VW yourself, just like a Corvair. Early attempts just put prop hubs on the existing cranks - this caused many issues. The VW engines by current GP and Revmasters have completely redesigned cranks with beefed up bearings up front. Essentially this is were the Corvair movement seems to have evolved with the 5th bearing and new cranks coming out.

Unless someone comes up with actual >reports (complete with tail numbers) I disregard their info. ust last fall, the gentleman in the hanger next to me was out flying his onex with an Aerovee VW conversion and his crank broke. The prop left the ipplane and he and his instructor put the Sonex down in a farm field six iles east of Stevens Point airport. The end result was a Sonex on it's back nd two very lucky almost unscathed pilots. Mark Jones (N886MJ) tevens Point, WI -mail: [email protected] eb: www.flykr2s.com
