The geared start that Great Plains Aircraft sells will work. Because its geared
it has an increase in torque. I have it on my GPAS VW 2180 and I am using a
small battery.

Russ, the part number you listed in your original email seems to come up as a
fuel pressure regulator or a direct drive starter. The direct drive Prestolite
starters I found with a part number like you listed was for a Johnson outboard
motor. I could not find a Prestolite starter with that exact part number you
listed but, that doesn't mean I am not in error. If it is a direct drive
starter then I am not surprised that it cant turn over your motor. It may even
have an issue with proper gearing to the flywheel gear.

As was mentioned earlier, you need to make sure your battery cables are tight
and in good condition and eliminate any electrical issues first.

Hi Russ,

Have you tried connecting a heavy duty car battery? does that turn the motor?

A over powerful starter will not work with a small aero battery, the internal
resistance of a small battery will limit the current flow through the starter.

Just something to think about.

I have a 1834 VW in my KR2 and am using the Diehl case with the prestolite

MDO 4207M and it does not have enough torque to pull it through the compression
stroke. Does anyone know what starters are being used on the larger VW engines?
I sure do hate to hand prop to get the engine started.
