Thank you, Larry and Tony-- Tony--thank you very much for sending that helpful material. I'm surprised at how close to the Diehl gear width dimensions I came (3" at bottom, 4.25" at widest, 2" plus at top).
With my taller spars I couldn't use the Diehl bracket. Since I couldn't use that, it made me rethink everything, with money on the brain. In retrospect I probably could have epoxied spruce blocks to the bottom face of the upper spar caps to gain the needed purchase for the WAF bolts, and just bought the Diehl setup. However, I've gotten good input from people who've had aluminum gear constructed, and I think I'll save at least $200 in the end. If anyone has advice or warnings about my planned setup, please let me know. Here it is: I'm using 3/4" 7075 T6 for the legs. When ordering, specify clearly that the metal grain must run lengthwise...don't assume they'll cut it that way. Mine will angle forward 15 degrees, to put the axle right under the front stub wing tip. They'll angle outward/downward 45 degrees. 27" leg length (fitting into taller spar brackets plus a little extra vertical height compared to the Diehl). Spar brackets will be 1/8" 4130 steel, modeled on the Diehl. Still a little hesitant about 1/8". Tracy O'Brian KR axle/bottom bracket combination (already bought--they're beautiful). All components cut and welded by a professional. Thanks again, and any further input would be appreciated. -Seth On 8/23/2012 7:52 PM, Larry&Sallie Flesner wrote: > >> I found a lot of Diehl gear posts in the archives, but none with the >> width dimensions of the legs. >> If someone has those, or could measure them, I'd appreciate it! >> For example: 2" at the top >> 4" at widest part on the spar bracket >> Narrowing to 3" where the lower bracket attaches >> Seth >> > +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ > > Sounds like you are making your own set of legs.
