If stored properly, dry conditions, moderate temperatures, the wood should not deteriorate with age.  How many aircraft are flying with wood spars / ribs that were built 75 years ago.  I'm setting on oak kitchen chairs that were "refinished" for my parents as a wedding present 100 years ago.  I'm guessing my grand kids could still be using them 100 years from now.

As this is the first "in flight" structural failure that I'm aware of in my 30 years in the KR community, and given the fact that the pilot was an "aerobatic" pilot, I suspect there is more to the story than we are aware of at the moment.  Just a suspect on my part, no facts.
