One of my favorite Westerns is *Open Range*. In the climax shoot-out scene
Sue Barlow admonishes the corrupt marshall by saying, “You’re a disgrace,
Marshall Poole. You always have been.” Poole responds, “I know it. It’s
just the way it is.”

Back here in the real world, one almost never hears such a confession.
Instead, most bad deeds are coupled with a limitless supply of
rationalizations. What’s more, if you didn’t just fall off the turnip truck
and you’ve purchased from small businesses, you know that the final stage
before bankruptcy is, what I like to call, the Ponzi stage. It is at this
stage that the small business owner gets most creative with the
rationalizations for things like taking deposits or large prepayments for
goods they know are unlikely to ever ship. Maybe the owner is hoping for a
miracle. However, without the miracle they know they are "stealing" from
their latest customers.

On another list I am on – Mustang Aero – there are a group of Mustang
builders that are voicing their anger over their situation. They sent in
large sums of money months ago for kits or parts that have never shipped.
The owner won’t respond to their email or voicemail messages. Others on the
list don’t want the negative posts on the email list. Is it appropriate to
warn others of the situation or should the list only be a polite place even
when you know that others are likely to be in the same situation and out a
lot of money?

The admins of an email list or forum are always in a narrow zone between
maintaining polite discourse and not censoring free speech. I know. I have
had the job a few times over the last 20 years. As far as lists go, this
one is very tame. John and Mark are doing a fine job.
