For completeness:
And at the other end of the spectrum; the def*() interfaces not
be in any shared library, but directly linked from a .a, so no
conflicts could ever occur.
Unfortunately the def*() interfaces have escaped from ON
Consolidation Private.
Not part of this case: All of /etc/default is obsolete
and needs to be converted to service properties.
