By 'norm' I mean whatever 'Configure' does out of the box on Solaris. For example, other distributions choose to ship threaded perl by default, but we don't do that on Solaris because a) the vast majority of extensions aren't tested with it and b) it tends to blow up spectacularly. As with most things Solaris-related we favour stability and predictability over almost everything else, and in the case of perl if people don't like our choices they can always build their own version. -- Alan Burlison --
