Official Ubuntu repositories (like karmic-backports where you get digikam), work only with official packages. I will copy digikam/kipi- plugins also to kubuntu-ppa/beta, to ensure that you have packages built with kde 4.4 beta. I will name it ~karmic2 in order to be installable over karmic-backports
