"PINOCCHIO EFFECT" OF LYING IN CLINTON'S GRAND-JURY TESTIMONY --
STUDY

Chicago, May 19 (ANTARA/AFP) - President Bill Clinton validated
the "Pinocchio effect" of lying by touching his nose 0.26 times per
minute during his grand-jury testimony on his affair with Monica
Lewinsky, according to Illinois psychiatrists.
"When one lies, erectile tissue inside the nose engorges. We
named this the Pinocchio effect," said Alan Hirsch, of the Smell
and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation here, referring to the
Carlo Collodi story of the wooden puppet whose nose grows when he
lies.
"In response to this swelling, the nose itches, tempting the
subject to scratch, rub or otherwise touch the nose."
Hirsch and Charles Wolf, of the University of Illinois College
of Medicine, said they analyzed a 23-minute segment of Clinton's
videotaped August 17, 1998 testimony in which he was found to have
lied when he denied having had a sexual relationship with the former
White House intern.

Verbal and non-verbal indicators of lying

The researchers looked for 23 objective verbal and non-verbal
indicators of lying, including nose touching, stuttering, throat
clearing, gaze aversion, less eye blinking, increased drinking and
swallowing, less finger pointing, speech errors and denials of
lying.
They found that Clinton touched his nose 0.26 times per minute
(roughly once every four minutes) as compared to not at all during
two truthful control segments and increased the frequency of 20 of
23 clinically accepted indicators of deception.
Hirsch suggested that these indicators might be a reliable
method of detecting lying and could be used not only by
psychiatrists, but also by "attorneys, employers, spouses or anyone
interested in determining truthfulness."
He pointed out that when describing the murder of his estranged
wife Nicole, football great O.J. Simpson "like Clinton frequently
touched his nose, again demonstrating the Pinocchio effect."

Successful liars first of all deceive themselves

dd7:schers, who are presenting their findings at the annual
meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Washington this
week, noted that successful liars and psychiatric patients first of
all deceive themselves.
"With complete self-deception, liars are 'undetectable'. And
since psychotherapy patients tend to have higher levels of
education, a characteristic in common with frequent and successful
liars, they are, by their very nature, more adept at the art of
deception," they said.
