Muslim Supports Referendum on Aceh
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) _ An Indonesian Muslim leader
expressed support Wednesday for a referendum on the future of
Aceh,
an Indonesian province where separatists are fighting for
independence.
Clashes between insurgents and the security forces and
shootings
by unidentified gunmen have claimed hundreds of lives this
year in
Aceh, an oil-rich province on the northern tip of Sumatra
island.
Abdurrahman Wahid, chairman of Indonesia's largest Muslim
organization, Nahdlatul Ulama, is the most prominent
Indonesian
politician so far to call for a referendum in Aceh similar to
the
one held last month in East Timor. That vote unleashed a wave
of
violence by anti-independence militiamen who have killed
hundreds
of independence supporters and driven an estimated 300,000
people
from their homes.
Wahid told a gathering of clerics in Aceh's provincial
capital,
Banda Aceh, that he would inform President B.J. Habibie and
military commander Gen. Wiranto that the ``patience of the
Acehnese
people is almost gone.''
Wahid was in Banda Aceh along with Amien Rais, another
Muslim
leader and chairman of the National Awakening Party, to
attend a
prayer for peace in the province.
Before the meeting, Wahid and Rais unfurled a poster in
front of
the main mosque that read: ``The Aceh conflict can only be
resolved
through a referendum.''
Guerrillas in Aceh have been fighting for independence
for over
a decade.
Five civilians were killed Tuesday in separate incidents
around
the province, the Serambi Indonesia daily reported. The
killings
brought to 15 the number of deaths in the province since
Sunday.
