Indonesia bars Suharto trips
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - State investigators fearing ex-president
Suharto might try to flee abroad to escape corruption charges
Wednesday barred the former strongman from leaving the country for
six months. Chaerul Imam, a government lawyer heading the probe
against the 78-year-old ex-leader, said he made the decision after
receiving reports that Suharto's children have been planning to get
him out of the country. "Based on these reports, we imposed the ban,"
he said. Suharto's defense lawyer Juan Felix Tampubolon denied his
client, who claims he is too sick to face interrogation after
suffering two strokes, planned to skip the country that he ruled for
32 years. "Suharto does not want go abroad," Tampubolon said. "He
wants to die in Indonesia.".
