there are other tricks I have used for waking up serial devices.  Sometimes
setting the baud rate to 0 and then back to what-ever its supposed to be
works.

You might also try disabling the port and then re-enabling (comtrol drivers
have an easy way to do this from the PC).  

Like I said before, I'm happy with the comtrol rocket port unit.

By the way, on the PC/Linux front, you could get a microATX based system
which is much smaller than the standard boxes for the sites that have
serious space constraints.  Still seems overkill for the application.
