Some systems use some sort of inter-digit timer to get this to work. With the TDA systems in Australia, we can use up to 5 digits, so I may use the suggestion of numbering with 7 in front. Eg. 70101 upto 72901 etc.
The customer actually has 2 requirements, external calls and internal calls. For the internal calls, I'll number as above. For external calls, I'll number as above, but to save confusion from callers, I'll set the TVM50 to use PIN call routing to send calls through to the rooms so the callers just dial the room number (101). It's not as clean as how Mitel does it, but it should work in the end. Thanks all for all the feedback. If there are any other suggestions, please send them through anyway.
