I have wanted to post the following problem for a while but thought it was more
of a wiring problem as opposed to a phone problem. With the recent posts I've
seen, it's clear there are some members with expertise in wiring and so here
goes.
We have a KX-TD1232 installed with 32 extensions and 7 COs. The extensions are
KX-T7433 and 7435 and are spread across 3 buildings with the TD1232 in the
central building. The extensions all use a single pair on the digital
connection.
The extensions in one building do not work properly on some functions like
speakerphone and they don't work at all when we are on battery backup. I
traced the problem down to a voltage drop because the phones are so far away.
They are 800' from the TD1232. The voltage at the extension is around 5 volts
and so it is amazing they work at all. Anyway, the cable that was run when the
system was installed is 50 pair 24 gauge underground in a conduit. The
Panasonic manual says that we should have 22 gauge for that distance. In an
attempt to reduce the voltage drop, we tried doubling up two pair of the 24
gauge wire (we have spares). What we found is that no matter how we double the
pairs, the phones won't work at all. The voltage is much closer to 12 volts
but there is just a constant ticking sound in the handset and the phone won't
work. We tried use one pair on one side and another pair on the other side and
that didn't work. We tried using one wire from each pair doubled and that
didn't work. Using 2 pairs does certainly reduce the voltage drop but the
extension doesn't work at all. Any ideas of why this won't work? Thanks for any
advice you can give. Tom.
