Or replacing the batteries because the set "didn't talk up good" anymore???

All kidding aside, I DID have to replace talk batteries on an old local 
battery magneto intercom system at a camp here in rural NW CT...the local 
telco abandoned it....

That was 20 years ago though....wish I had managed to "obtain" a few of 
those sets.....
