I'm not sure why all this anger is focused on the guy who buys over the
internet.  I can't believe that you never have non-internet customers (or
potential ones) that try to squeeze you on equipment or services that you
provide.  that's just life.  do you invest as much energy into bitching
about them?

Here's a simple formula:  make a proposal to the cumstomer that you can
make money on.  let them walk if they dont like it.  if you think the
customer will be a problem, decline to bid on the job.  and, its very
reasonable to ask for a deposit.  however, you need to be careful not to
create an unnecessarily adversarial situation (as do the customers).  trust
and goodwill are still important.

In my line of work (nothing related), we get all kinds of customers trying
to low ball us.  we run the numbers and make a decision based on them.
simple as that.  we ain't doing work for free.  If some one is a complete
asshole, we take that into account.  we've been burned but not enough to
hurt us, even in this downturn.
