Here's how you can do it:

There is a box that will take 2 lines in and give you 1 line out. When you
put 2 co lines in, which ever one rings will be switched to the output jack.
It is made to let you use one answering machine on 2 lines. Since it
switches as soon as it senses the ringing voltage, the output jack will
still pass the caller id signal. Therefore one caller id box on the output
will display the cid for both of the co lines. This hook up is in parallel
with the phone system. When the call is answered via the phone system, the
device should still switch to the ringing line.

Connect the output to a spare pair and put a jack for the cid box on that
pair.

You can then link more than one switch unit. 2 lines feed one box, the
output feeds the input of a second box. The other input of the second box
can be connected directly to a line or to the output of a third box. As
long as they switch in time for the cid signal to pass through you should be
able to connect them.

Radio shack used to sell but now I have seen a better one at Staples
(labeled by ATT) which actually lets you select which line you would like as
a default for outgoing. This helps if you want to use the line as a power
fail line.
