Study in Venezuela

About the program

Venezuela, home to the Andes mountains,
Amazonian rainforests, and Caribbean coast, is
undergoing a rural transformation. Displaced
family farmers are returning to the countryside
and setting up organic farms and rebuilding
rural communities.

Join us in the launch of our new summer
program in Venezuela where you’ll learn more
about new forms of rural development popular
among family farmers and their governmental
supporters. Their unique endeavors focus on
land reform, support for farming and food
processing cooperatives, and the development of
an agro-ecological training school for campesino
farmers from throughout Latin America.

Course of
study

You will earn 3
credits for your
studies in Venezuela
which will require
both pre and post
trip assignments.
Your program will
take you to Yaracuy,
and Barinas where
you will explore the
surrounding farming

communities and towns, and meet with
campesino and government leaders about their
lifestyles, beliefs amd development initiatives.
This will be an exciting opportunity to learn
about creative rural development alternatives in
Latin America that attempt to deal with persistent
poverty and inequality in the region.

The course will run for ten days for approxi

mately six hours a day. Projects, written work,
hours of contact, and the level of instruction
meet, in full, the standards maintained at
Rutgers University. If you are not normally
enrolled at Rutgers, you will receive a Rutgers
University transcript at the end of the program.
Transcripts will not be released until all payments
have been made and all debts paid.

Housing and meals

Students will stay in small eco-tourism inns
throughout the trip with double occupancy. The
instructor will supervise and live in the same
housing as you for the duration of your stay in
Venezuela. There will be frequent activities and
study periods in the evening.

Administration

Rutgers Study Abroad in Venezuela will be
administered by the Rutgers Study Abroad
Office in cooperations with Cook College and The
Labor Studies Department. The responsibility of
Rutgers ends after the closing activity of the
program. If students want to stay in the country
longer than the closing date of the program
then travel and living arrangements become
their own responsibility.

Program dates

1 June to 10 June

Program costs

NJ Resident: $1,050

Non-NJ Resident: $1,250

The program costs include tuition, fees,
housing, orientations, travel within Venezuela,
and basic medical insurance.

The program costs do not include, travel to
and from Venezuela, meals, personal expenses,
books, or personal liability insurance.

Fees are subject to change. Inflation and fluctuating
exchange rates have made it impossible to state fixed costs. These rates
could increase 10 to 15 percent. A $300 registration fee is charged to
all non-Rutgers students.
