Coalition for Community Control Over the Police 1.25.08 for immediate release Contact Jubilee Shine 213.663.6316 Community residents and activists will march on LAPD Southwest HQ Saturday in opposition to a proposed neighborhood injunction. The injunction will enact a police database instituting a 10pm curfew, restrict access to Vermont Square Park and prohibit public association of anyone on the list, from 110 freeway to Crenshaw, from MLK Blvd to 52nd St. Injunctions violate of the Constitution and do nothing to solve the South Central L.A. problems of unemployment, lack of training, quality education, recreation & cultural activities, and resultant poverty, street crime and violence. They only increase police hostility and exacerbate existing tensions. Wealthier suburban neighborhoods do not have street crime and violence because they have jobs and education, opportunities to achieve. The LAPD itself is under a federal injunction, the Consent Decree, which it has failed to fully comply with, compelling the federal judge to extend it for another five years, over the protest of city officials. We know that LAPD will never conform to normal community standards until it is placed under absolute community control, like the school district, in the form of an all-elected, all-civilian, police control board. The march will begin at noon, Saturday, 1.26, at Vermont Square Park (47th & Budlong) and end at the LAPD Southwest HQ, 1546 w. MLK Blvd. The final court hearing on the injunction is 8:30am, Tuesday, 1.29, dept. 85, 111 no.
