Truthdig Retreat in Santa Fe
May 20 -- May 25, 2012

Chris Hedges
Robert Scheer
Col. Ann Wright
Rep. Dennis Kucinich

Santa Fe is a place of incredible natural beauty and an unsurpassed source
of renewal. The landscape that has inspired painters, poets and writers
for generations will help us explore current problems and travel paths to
a better future.

Toward that end, speakers including Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Truthdig
contributors Robert Scheer, Chris Hedges and Col. Ann Wright will lead a
series of discussions.

Chris Hedges will discuss multinational corporations and the Occupy
movement, with an emphasis on the important role of nonviolence. Hedges,
an Occupy activist who has been arrested at protests, has written
extensively on these subjects since before the movement began, reporting
on the quiet decimation of the middle class and the growing economic
inequity in the United States.

Dennis Kucinich, a member of the U.S. House for two decades, has led the
fight for peace and social justice. His inside account of how Congress
works and the struggles within the Democratic Party will tell us much
about the possibilities for political change. As Rep. Kucinich said in a
recent Truthdig interview, "With an American economy falling apart ...
[w]e are at a decisive moment in the history of this country."

Robert Scheer, in a setting not far from Los Alamos, where the atomic bomb
was developed during World War II, will discuss the international
proliferation of nuclear weapons. He will also explore the economic
meltdown that he predicted more than a decade ago and how issues related
to the financial collapse are now playing out in national politics.

Author-activist Ann Wright, a retired Army colonel and former US diplomat,
will speak about the coming court-martial of Pfc. Bradley Manning in
contrast to the American killings of unarmed civilians, sexual assaults
against women in the military, and hazings of troops that have resulted in
suicides, all of which receive stunningly different treatment from the
government.

Our Favorite Things to Do in Town

The following attractions are accessible through the shuttle service or
are within walking distance:

Gallery Row is home to 132 galleries featuring a range of art, including a
vast collection of works by Native Americans.

Santa Fe museums. There are more than a dozen museums in the heart of
Santa Fe, including four world-class institutions on Museum Hill, that
collectively feature the art, history and culture of the Native American
Southwest, the Spanish colonial past and folk traditions from around the
world. The New Mexico Museum of Art is home to extensive collections of
work by early Santa Fe and Taos artists as well as contemporary artists.
The Georgia O?Keeffe Museum in downtown Santa Fe is dedicated to the
artist for whom it is named, one of the most significant of the 20th
century.

Shopping is only steps from Hotel Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Plaza, less than
a mile away, is lined with shops offering an array of treasures. Many
shops are Southwestern in theme, featuring art made by local Native
Americans.

Restaurants are plentiful in downtown Santa Fe. Indulge in traditional or
innovative Southwestern fare, or choose from contemporary, Asian, French,
Italian, Indian, Middle Eastern and other fine cuisines.

Excursions
Guided Group Excursion

We'll take you to visit Los Alamos National Laboratory with Robert Scheer.
Includes access to the Bradbury Science Museum, with interactive exhibits
on nuclear weapons history. Also includes a picnic lunch at the Bandelier
National Monument, a rugged and beautiful national park with petroglyphs,
dwellings carved into soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls from an
ancient Indian village going back over 11,000 years.

Other Places You Can Explore

Ghost Ranch is a 21,000-acre retreat and education center located about 50
miles northwest of Santa Fe. Run by the Presbyterian church and open to
the public, it is the subject of many landscapes by the American painter
Georgia O?Keeffe, who made a summer home here from 1949 until her death in
1986. Dinosaur bones were found here as early as 1885, and the site?s
paleontological dig is known worldwide. Attractions include museums of
paleontology and anthropology, O?Keeffe tours and more.

Jemez Springs is nestled between stunning red rock mesas that are remnants
of ancient lava flows more than a million years old. The mineral hot
springs were created by fissures in the earth that allow water at the
surface to be heated by magma below. The springs, 85 miles west of Santa
Fe, are considered to have a healing and rejuvenating effect.

Shidoni, an art gallery including eight acres of sculpture gardens, other
works by local artisans and a bronze art foundry, is spread along the Rio
Tesuque on a former apple orchard and located seven miles north of Santa
Fe.

Taos Pueblo is home to the Taos Native American community, which has
inhabited the land for over 1,000 years. Guests are welcome to visit the
multi-story adobe buildings and experience the rich history and
breathtaking scenery. Taos is 70 miles northeast of Santa Fe.

Ten Thousand Waves, only five miles northeast of Santa Fe, is a unique
mountain spa resort dedicated to providing a Japanese sense of serenity. A
number of spa treatments are offered, including hot baths, massage and
skin care.
